BC Psychologists at Shift Psych

Welcome to our elevated therapy experience; one that didn’t exist before. As of Summer 2021, we’re bringing our origin-focused therapy to BC, virtually. We provide proactive psychology, before things get out of hand (but if you’re already there, don’t worry, we can help with that too).

Our humble beginning started in Edmonton, Alberta. Using our carefully constructed psychology protocol, we’ve been able to help many Albertans faced with a wide variety of challenges, from stress and burnout to relationship problems, and we thought it was time to do the same in BC. We are now providing online counselling services in Vancouver, Victoria, Kelowna and across BC.

Almost half of individuals in British Columbia will experience a mental health challenge, including depression, anxiety and burnout. Whether you are experiencing one of these challenges or just need some help with a general life challenge, Shift therapy can help you address your concerns.

We truly believe that anyone can benefit from psychology; especially a carefully built and results-driven psychology program. Shift is for anyone who wants to live their ideal reality. Whether you’re trying to be a better parent, navigating a new injury or illness or experiencing a life transition like a new career in Kelowna or retirement, Shift is here for you.

Here's what structured therapy in BC looks like...

Shift therapy is an experience. We’ve meticulously built a protocol that works. Here’s how it goes. We’ll get to know as much of you as humanly possible in 50 minutes. We’ll identify your global ‘limiting beliefs (the stuff that’s at the root of your concerns).

We then take a deep dive into your limiting beliefs and create an inventory. We’ll also determine your ‘dysfunctional needs’ that pop up in response to a specific limiting belief (e.g. striving for perfection). Together, we’ll determine which limiting belief to tackle to the ground first.

Then, we’ll use bilateral stimulation to reprocess traumatic events and memories that are linked to limiting beliefs. This removes any emotion associated with the memory, thus removing the limiting belief. It sounds crazy, but trust us, it works.

Eventually, you’re left with an absence of response. That’s the goal, to not be activated and bothered by the things you used to be. We repeat this process for as many limiting beliefs as you’d like. The time spent in therapy is different for everyone.

Also, therapy is kind of like going to the gym. You get out what you put in.

More about our BC counselors

We’re excited to now be providing our results-driven therapy program on the other side of the Rockies in British Columbia. Our BC psychologists are all trained in the Shift method and focused on delivering an elevated therapy experience.

Our “virtual shop” are located in Vancouver, Victoria and Kelowna, but anyone across British Columbia can access our mental health services. Our counselors go through our in-house training program to ensure they are well-equipped to help you address your concerns. Your session with your counselor will be 50 minutes long, and follow a structured protocol. Double-intensive sessions are available too, if that works better for you.

Tips for better mental health from BC counselors

We all know that taking care of our minds is just as important as taking care of our bodies. You wouldn’t put your body through an ridiculously challenging obstacle course day after day would you? Why do the same to your mind? Take the time you need to ensure that you are fulfilled in different areas of your life, and this of course includes self care. Here are some ways to do just that in BC.

  1. Read – We’ve been pretty consumed with screens lately. Reading a book is a great way to take a break from the digital world. Reading on a device or listening to an audiobook is great too, but the real deal is the way to go, in our opinion! Read something you might not have before; this will open your mind to new ideas and perspectives. You could join a book club, or start your own with a couple friends.
  2. Have a routine  – As much as spontaneity and adventure is great, it’s just as important to have a routine. Routine is actually an important part of our lives and it gives us rhythm, and a structure. This could include your morning routine, your sleep hygiene routine, taking time for yourself everyday, or making time for people that are important to you.
  3. Try a new sport – BC has a lot to offer on this front. From wakeboarding in Kelowna to surfing in Tofino, to skiing in the mountains – the options are endless! It’s always great to try something new, it challenges your body and mind, and humans love exploring new things. This is a great bonding experience as well, if you choose to do it with others.
  4. Have a game night – Similar to trying a new sport, playing games can often challenge your mind, especially the strategy ones. It’s another great bonding opportunity as well. You could host a game night with friends or family, and there are tons of games to choose from!
  5. Set boundaries – We know that social connection is extremely important and a huge protective factor, but it’s also important to set healthy boundaries. This can be challenging, but it’s worth it – for your own sanity and to strengthen your relationships. Setting boundaries requires you to understand yourself and your needs, and have open and honest communication in your relationships.
  6. Go on a road trip – Another great opportunity to go on an adventure. Travelling doesn’t have to be far away and extravagant. There are tons of places to visit just within BC itself. You could do this on your own or with people you want to spend intentional time with.
  7. Quality time – Make an effort to spend quality time with the people you care about. This is different than just coexisting with your family, for example. Pick a night each week to make dinner with your partner, or spend time with a friend. And don’t forget to put your phone away!
